(and you can too)

Ben Holding My Hand During Worship

“Please stand as you are able for the reading of the gospel.”

We stood, and my son, Ben, put his hand over mine as we listened to two stories about healing from Mark 5:21-43. I didn’t notice or think anything about it at first. But then it struck me: How many fourteen-year-old boys hold their father’s hand?

Ben isn’t a particularly touchy-feely individual. Yet his action came naturally and voluntary. It was without pretense or manipulation. That Ben would feel free to express himself in such a way made me feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. I thought of my relationship with my father. I had great respect for him. However, at fourteen it would have never occurred to me to touch him.

I’ve never been a big fan of poetry, probably because I’ve never been good at writing it. Hopefully, the picture I recreated of the moment (with Ben’s cooperation) will be the semblance of a poem.

What a wonderful post! As the mother of a little guy who’s three, I do want that same easy intimacy when he’s a teen. Thanks for the shot of hope in this post!

Cool! I have always appreciated all three of your children, and you would think I would actually feel closer to Sam, since I got to see him more as a child, but actually I have always thought Ben has a personality that I would hope my son would have, if I had a son. I love his dry sense of humor.

Your Mom told me a story once about Sam and Ben. The boys were at her house and Sam got to go get the mail out of the box at the top of the path. They were pretty young. Ann reminded Sam not to step in the road, and Ben said, “Grandmommy, if Sam gets hit by a car and dies can I get the mail?”(May have lost some words in the translation and over time). He had the straight face and he was so young. I love his scacasm and dry humor. Anyway- Great pic Doug. Keep up the good work.

Another moment of grace: unmerited, unexpected, unannounced, unassuming.
