Interesting thought … that God calls us to live simple or simplified lives in order to live a Godly life. Not sure I buy it. It is in the complexity of our lives – the relationships, the tasks, the work and ministry, the many ways in which we touch the lives of others – that we are made complete and find meaning. I wonder if simplicity and simple lives are only myths, unattainable in a society and culture, perhaps even in a faith, that demands complexity. For some of us, much of that complexity is a result of our vocation, our livelihood, that which we do in order to have a family and a place in society. Unless we’re ready and willing to give it all up and move to a desert cave, wear skins and eat locusts, simplicity seems something foreign to real life. Is it possible that God also calls us to complexity, to involvement, to day-to-day engagement in the very business of living? “When true simplicity is gained” is a nice thought in “Simple Gifts,” but is it possible, or even desirable today?

As Americans we have become spoiled in our level of “comfort”. If you look at other people in other parts of the world, they are living happy lives with much less. It is possible to scale back. It is hard due to the Americanized way of thinking, but that is what we need to start working on in our personal lives. Simple things that we take for granted other people don’t even have them. For instance: a pair of socks. A homeless person would love a pair of socks. How many of us have a drawer full of socks that is so stuffed you have to push it down to close it. We have too much stuff!!
Make life simple. I agree with you Doug. You are on the right track.

Wow. Great cam today. I like your thought and have preached similarly at times. I like LeeGayle agree with you and that is the challenge, but I think many congregations get it or at least they are doing those simple things for those around them. The challenge for me in my ministry is motivating them to move outside of the congregation to do that for others.
