On this Memorial Day weekend, the youth from the group sang God Bless America in worship. As a rule, I don’t respond well to mixing patriotism with religion. But something was different about hearing these particular youth sing this particular song. It was a moment of unexpected grace.
Thanks for posting this, Doug. I agree with you concerning the synthesizing of religious practice and patriotic zeal; however, this moment at Belmont seems very different from the more widespread blending. It offers, to my mind, the new birth and the refuge offered both by the United States and by Christ.

Before they sang, we heard about the refugee camps and the families still remaining there and not safe. And then they sang with joy and enthusiasm, and invited the congregation to join in. I agree that it was grace.
