I need advice on how to find time to rest.

1. Skip the early workout on choir days. We need you in choir.
2. Try working out between work & choir. Give yourself some downtime. You don’t get any at work, and it’s hard to be “on” all the time.
3. What takes so long to prepare for work the next day? Deciding what to wear & getting clothes ready, as well as packing lunch? Try clothes that don’t have to be ironed, or take them to the dry cleaners. Pack easy lunches. If we don’t have leftovers, I keep some frozen meals handy that I can grab in the a.m. and add a fruit & salad. Also have yogurt & nuts for snack. Don’t always eat snacks, but it’s great to have some nuts & dried fruit in case I get hungry.
4. It’s okay to take a nap. Mike Hyatt suggests taking one every day. (But he doesn’t have to keep office hours.) Even 15-20 minutes can refresh you.
5. I know you want to be there for your kids, but at some point you have to choose which of their events you will attend. With 3 kids as heavily involved in various activities as yours, perhaps you need to put concerts, basketball games, etc. on a calendar that lets you see a week at a glance…and plan accordingly.
6. Take time for yourself every day. Every day. Even 10 minutes.
7. Perhaps you could switch up your workouts and go to the gym only 3 days a week. Walking is good. Yoga might help you find some peace of mind.
8. And in the mix of all this, don’t forget Frank. Ask for his suggestions, as he knows your schedule, your personality, and your needs better than anyone besides yourself.
9. If you’re still packing lunches for your kids, drop that habit. When they ask you to do something for them, ask yourself, “Is this something they can do for themselves?”
I sound like I have all the answers, which I do not. I am constantly striving for balance in my own life. Spending time in nature is healing for me. Spending time alone gives me a change to recharge. Learn, if you don’t already know, what “floats your boat.” Don’t forget the possibility of doing something creative. Yeah, I know, that adds one more thing to your schedule.Maybe the most important suggestion I can make is to take vacation days at planned intervals. I can go for about 6 weeks without feeling like I need a day off. If I wait longer than that, I go crazy.
Best wishes. Love you!

Anne, you’re awesome to share these suggestions! #1 is really the killer. I can make it work on Wednesday’s, but it’s Thursday that really gets me. I may have to skip the morning workout since Wednesday is so long, or find a place to nap between work and choir.
All good advice!
